“The Rider life”
Days of a Rough Rider on the Road to the Classic.

My name is Alberto Rodriguez. I am a Roosevelt Rough Rider and I am a student athlete living the Rider Life. Growing up was a breeze, until I hit that age of having responsibility. My whole life changed the day I saw my first game. To make it more exciting it was the East Los Angeles Classic. Since that day I said to myself “I got to do this” and in time my destiny was calling. I remember asking one coach, “I want to try out for football” he said with a smile as a discrete message of “ok let’s see what you got” kind of attitude, and from there, the rest is history. I would like to say that whether your in season or not, I realized it’s always a day to leave it all out there until your legs collapse. I’m home until I feel I had a good day of practice, which might mean I am not home until 7:30 or 8. Usually I’m one of the last if not the last to leave, in my eyes that’s what a true Rough Rider does even if I play or not the reward is knowing I gave it all I’ve got and shouldn’t be ashamed if it was enough or not. As a student athlete, what you got to remember is that student comes first the rest will take care of its self. No grades, no game it’s that simple. Yet the most common thing you will hear is “the coach won’t punt me in because he’s a jerk” or “they don’t like me.” What is not really realized is they have to check on themselves before any accusation. I never quit. Since I’m from ESP, I am an outcast. I struggle to get from the ESP to the main campus. Practice starts at 3, but if there is no study hall, then we are lifting at 2 o’clock. We lift like if it is our last day and then of to the field for a brutal day of hitting. To this point I have never gotten a concussion but I have gotten my bell rung so to speak. It is not the pain that bothers me when that occurs it is what my inner voice is telling me. “What are you doing, please stop! No more, no more.” Yet I ignore it but it is such a hard thing to do when your body says stop but your heart says go. I stay every day when everyone is gone. They call me a die hard because they see me push myself over the limit to what they think I have. As long as I have a breath in my body I can move, as long as I can move I will never stop, as long as I never stop I will never quit.

Somewhat About Me!!!

Well, hey everybody my name is Laura Mendoza. I’ve been in ESP for 2 years. I am a junior and I am class of “2012”. Yey yea!!! I’ve had lots of experiences here at ESP. For example I got to join leadership with Mr. Mata. Now he is doing the “Journalism” class, and guess what people, I got him again. But he is cool. Ummm… kind of picky like my mom, but he is cool overall and funny too =). Anyways leadership was fun, (at times). Sometimes it was kind of frustrating and difficult but we did fine and Mata was always there to help us even though sometimes he was having a bad time, he is a very good teacher I would say. I learned a lot from leadership, I broke out of my shell now I am not that shy anymore and I am more of an outgoing and positive person. I believe anything is possible. I am really friendly person and easy to get along with. I like to help in anything I can and be involved in everything that goes on basically in school and no am not a NERD. Also, hear at ESP I met this guy I’m pretty sure you all now thee name is Hugo Ordaz; my boyfriend. He helped me a lot to overcome some stuff and to me Hugo is an example to follow. He had lots of problems but he made it and graduated from high school. Now he is going to college and I am proud of him. Also I learned and got to experience DANZA AZTECA. Danza comes from somewhere in Mexico many years ago. I learn to dance it thanks to Ms. Huerta another teacher here at ESP. Its just so amazing how she was prego and she will still dance and move better than anybody in the class, and she was Prego!!! I mean, I admire her. We learned a lot from her and it was totally a new experience. We got to make our own trajes for Danza and our copilis, which is the head piece. We also learned to help each other and work as a team. We only got to perform 3 or 4 times, I remember our first performance was in 5 de Mayo. I was really nervous because it was my first time and also dancing in front of people, and more than anybody, Hugo. Oh god it was kind of embarrassing but it went pretty well. The only bad thing that the floor was extremely hot and Danza you are supposed to dance it barefoot, we got lots of blisters. Some one had said the floor wasn’t hot, and when we came out guess what the floor was really hot.  Well nimodo right we had to dance anyways we were there already and people we expecting it. But it was all worth it and it was really fun am looking forward to it again. = ) until next time!!!

Background on Racism

Steven Diaz

Racism is the thought that one specific race is superior or than another and that a person’s attributes are predetermined by his or her inborn biological characteristics. “Racism has existed throughout human history.”(from www.adl.org). People that are affected by racism are judged by their characteristics, such as skin color, language, customs, and place of birth. Racism is shown by hatred of one person to another or the belief that another person is less than a human. The causes of racism have led to slavery, wars, the formations of nations, and legal codes.

In our community, Boyle Heights, racism is a big problem that goes roaming
around every street and affects many races, mostly Latinos. Most of the racist groups that have attacked the Latinos have either insulted them, humiliated, and even killed them just because of their characteristics. This isn’t the only race that is being affected by racism, Asians, African-Americans, and even Americans are attacked by racist groups. These groups have the belief that their race or group are superior than the rest of the races just because of their differences. This groups are accomplishing their goals and we have to stop them from destroying our community and most of all ruining many lives.

A website that you could visit to a bit more about racism is http://www.adl.org/hate-patrol/racism.asp. This website could explain more about the background as well as other type of discrimination that occurs. It would also give you a clear description about this topic and have you see how racism has affected this world for a very long time.

Movie Freak

The rainy, foggy weather makes ME want to watch...

By: Karla Ferman

We all have our different categories of movies. I vary depending on my mood and the weather is a huge component too. For example, right now I'm sitting here while it's raining outside. To be honest I love corny, romantic chick flicks. I have many movies that i love in that category but one of my all time favorites is Made of Honor. I could go into details and tell you a summary that you'll have to read but how bout you just view this video.

Okay well that's Made of Honor. This movie is High-Larious and it really can make you open up your eyes to realize that love can exist and that maybe...just maybe, it's closer than you may think.

Another category that i love is horror/suspense because..well imagine this: You're sitting with a blanket wrapped around you, popcorn or chips on the side, or if you like to feel warm hot cocoa, while you watch Wrong Turn. It's dark as it is because of this foggy weather outside. So turn off the lights, close the windows, and raise the volume of your TV. The unexpected noises or gruesome things you will see or hear will have you jumping and possibly wishing you had a bucket on the side for those puking urges.

I'll have more movie names up before the end of the week.(:

Living the Mexica Life

The Beat of the Drum is the Beat to our Hearts

Cindy Renteria

Deep in our roots we all are Mexicas or Mayans. English is from Europe, which is white; Spanish is from Spain, which is white. Start living up to who you should really be. I am Cindy Renteria I started danza when I was ten. It became a big part of my life to the point that it is my way of living. When I dance I feel alive with the beat drum connecting to the beat of my heart and the everyone dancing as one in a circle. Over the years, being part of a group, I started to feel part of a family. Everyone cares for everyone, but of course in families there are conflicts; nothing you can't fix. Learning the traditions, ancestors, the dances and the symbols made me become humble about so  many things, such as loving our mother Earth, learning the spirits and how they still connect to us. The danza ways can sometimes be very spiritual, but in time you'll come to understand.

There are so many ceremonies that happen within our group and out. There are certain main ceremonies we like to celebrate such as, for the kids, the Day of the Dead, La Resistencia, girls becoming women and guys becoming men. There several groups through out the United States, and as well in Mexico, that do give us invites to there ceremonies. So we do travel a lot through out the year. And you're always learning more about danza and the traditions.
